Finns travel on average 14 500 kilometres per year. That is 1 500 kilometres more than the EU average. Annual goods transport performance in Finland is 7 200 ton kilometres per capita. That is 3 000 ton kilometres more than the EU average. The growth of transport in 1970-97, however, has been slower in Finland than in other EU-countries.

The Finnish transport system is generally more environmentally friendly than in other EU-countries. Rail and water transport account for one third of tonne kilometres in Finland, whereas the EU average is about a fifth. In Finland, the share of rail transport has increased. In Europe the trend has been the opposite. The transport sector's share of total emissions is below the EU average.
