Nordic Transport Observatory
What is Nordic Triangle Transport Monitoring Centre?
The Nordic Triangle Transport Observatory in Finland (NTO) is one of the 5 pilot observatories implemented in the Assembling research project.
The basic idea of the NTO is to collect and manage information that is relevant to strategic transport planning and decision-making in the Southern Finland transport corridor.
As to the European context, the more precise goal of the NTO is to assure a permanent supply of realistic, field-oriented and updated information to assess key questions as regards the European Common Transport Policy.
The monitoring exercise will initially be focused on trends and changes of, for example, traffic safety, within the corridor.
On the other hand, the objectives of the Observatory include the monitoring of studies, forecasts, decision-maker's preferences as well as planning, decisions and legislation that are connected to the Nordic Triangle transport corridor or the transport policy goals.
The viability of the NTO is to be analysed during the Assembling research project. At this point, four institutional possibilities have been analysed:
- Private company,
- Public funded society,
- Part of transport administration and
- Continuous project.
The constituency of the NTO is still open to all possibilities. However, it seems that "continuous project" may be the most feasible choice.
