The driving force in terms of human activities cause a derived demand for transport infrastructure and transport related services. Transportation, on the other hand, has two different faces: increased access to many facilities (potentiality) and increased deterioration of the quality of life (externalities).

The existing state of the transportation system consists of the existing infrastructure (capacity, possibilities), management policies (regulations, taxation, pricing, control) and the impacts (user costs, maintenance/capital costs, external costs).

If the existing situation is not desired regarding e.g. the foreseeable development of the driving force or the internal and external costs of traffic, there is need for policy response..

The territorial breakdown used in the presentation of information is as follows:

  1. European Union (EU15)

  2. Finland (NUTS0: FI1)

  3. Southern Finland Transport Corridor (NUTS2: FI11+FI12)

  4. Regions in the Southern Finland Transport Corridor (NUTS3: FI11+FI121-FI127)

The following tables explain the connections between the conceptual framework (The Driving Force-Existing State-Policy Response) and the information presented on this Web site.
